Overview
The BS 9228:2021 standard is a comprehensive guide dedicated to the recycling of roads and other paved areas using bitumen emulsion, foamed bitumen, or hydraulic material. This specification covers the essential aspects of materials, production, installation, and product type testing, ensuring that all processes meet the highest standards of quality and efficiency.
Why Choose BS 9228:2021?
With the increasing need for sustainable and cost-effective road maintenance solutions, the BS 9228:2021 standard provides a robust framework for recycling existing road materials. This not only reduces the environmental impact but also offers significant cost savings. Here are some key benefits:
- Environmental Sustainability: By recycling existing materials, this standard helps reduce the carbon footprint associated with road construction and maintenance.
- Cost-Effective: Utilizing recycled materials can lead to substantial cost savings in both material and labor.
- Quality Assurance: The standard includes rigorous testing procedures to ensure the recycled materials meet high-quality standards.
- Versatility: Applicable to various types of paved areas, including roads, parking lots, and industrial sites.
Materials
The BS 9228:2021 standard specifies the use of bitumen emulsion, foamed bitumen, and hydraulic materials. Each of these materials has unique properties that make them suitable for different recycling applications:
- Bitumen Emulsion: A mixture of bitumen and water, stabilized with an emulsifying agent. It is ideal for cold recycling processes.
- Foamed Bitumen: Bitumen that has been expanded by the addition of water, creating a foam that can be mixed with aggregate materials.
- Hydraulic Materials: Materials such as cement or lime that react with water to form a hard, durable substance.
Production
The production process outlined in the BS 9228:2021 standard ensures that recycled materials are produced consistently and to a high standard. Key aspects of the production process include:
- Material Selection: Choosing the right materials based on the specific requirements of the project.
- Mix Design: Developing a mix design that ensures the recycled material meets the necessary performance criteria.
- Quality Control: Implementing quality control measures to monitor the production process and ensure consistency.
Installation
Proper installation is crucial to the success of any recycling project. The BS 9228:2021 standard provides detailed guidelines for the installation of recycled materials, including:
- Surface Preparation: Ensuring the existing surface is properly prepared before the application of recycled materials.
- Application Techniques: Using the correct techniques to apply the recycled materials, whether through cold in-place recycling, hot in-place recycling, or full-depth reclamation.
- Compaction: Ensuring the recycled material is properly compacted to achieve the desired density and strength.
Product Type Testing
To ensure the highest quality, the BS 9228:2021 standard includes rigorous product type testing. This testing verifies that the recycled materials meet the necessary performance criteria, including:
- Strength: Ensuring the recycled material has the necessary strength to withstand traffic loads.
- Durability: Verifying that the material will perform well over time, even under harsh conditions.
- Moisture Resistance: Ensuring the material is resistant to moisture, which can cause damage and reduce the lifespan of the pavement.
Conclusion
The BS 9228:2021 standard is an essential resource for anyone involved in the recycling of roads and other paved areas. By following this standard, you can ensure that your recycling projects are environmentally sustainable, cost-effective, and of the highest quality. Whether you are a contractor, engineer, or project manager, the BS 9228:2021 standard provides the guidance you need to achieve successful outcomes.
BS 9228:2021
This standard BS 9228:2021 Recycling of roads and other paved areas using bitumen emulsion, foamed bitumen or hydraulic material. Materials, production, installation and product type testing. Specification is classified in these ICS categories:
- 91.100.50 Binders. Sealing materials
- 75.140 Waxes, bituminous materials and other petroleum products
This British Standard specifies requirements for materials processed with either bituminous emulsion, foamed bitumen or hydraulic material, including their design and composition, production, installation and performance testing.
This British Standard includes requirements for mixtures prepared using bituminous binders that may also contain hydraulic material.
This British Standard describes a number of processes and methods by which existing material in the road or other paved areas is either processed in-situ or uses recycled material processed ex-situ.
NOTE 1 BS 9227 specifies requirements for the production, installation, testing and conformity of hydraulically bound materials (HBM) conforming to BS EN 14227 Parts 1 to 5 for pavement applications, whether constructed by the ex-situ or in-situ methods. It also includes requirements for preliminary work at the laying site, needed to ensure that the substrate is fit to receive the HBM. BS 9227 includes only materials conforming with BS EN 14227 Parts 1 to 5 whether from recycled or virgin materials. For the recycling of pavements, TRL Report TRL 611 [1] can be used.
NOTE 2 BS EN 13108-31 specifies requirements for asphalt concrete using aggregate conforming to BS EN 13043 and bituminous emulsion for use on roads, and other trafficked areas.
NOTE 3 Guidance on the selection and use of cold recycled materials is given in Annex A.
