Overview

The BS EN 15741:2020 standard is an essential document for professionals involved in the animal feed industry, providing comprehensive guidelines for the sampling and analysis of animal feeding stuffs. This standard specifically focuses on the determination of Organochlorine Pesticides (OCPs) and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS), a highly precise and reliable analytical method.

Why Choose BS EN 15741:2020?

Ensuring the safety and quality of animal feed is crucial for the health of livestock and, consequently, for human health. The presence of harmful substances like OCPs and PCBs in animal feed can have detrimental effects. This standard provides a robust framework for detecting these contaminants, ensuring that feed products meet safety regulations and quality standards.

Key Features

  • Comprehensive Guidelines: Offers detailed procedures for sampling and analysis, ensuring accuracy and consistency in results.
  • Advanced Analytical Method: Utilizes GC/MS, a state-of-the-art technique known for its sensitivity and specificity in detecting trace levels of contaminants.
  • Industry Compliance: Helps organizations comply with international safety standards, enhancing their credibility and marketability.

Detailed Content

This 50-page standard is meticulously structured to provide clear and concise instructions. It covers various aspects of sampling and analysis, including:

  • Sampling Techniques: Detailed methods for collecting representative samples from different types of animal feed.
  • Preparation and Extraction: Guidelines for preparing samples and extracting analytes for analysis.
  • Instrumental Analysis: Step-by-step instructions for setting up and operating GC/MS equipment.
  • Data Interpretation: Techniques for analyzing and interpreting data to ensure accurate results.

Benefits of Implementing BS EN 15741:2020

Implementing this standard offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Enhanced Safety: By identifying and quantifying harmful substances, this standard helps protect animal and human health.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensures that feed products meet stringent quality criteria, boosting consumer confidence.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Assists in meeting legal requirements, reducing the risk of non-compliance penalties.
  • Market Advantage: Demonstrates a commitment to quality and safety, providing a competitive edge in the marketplace.

Who Should Use This Standard?

  • Feed Manufacturers: To ensure their products are free from harmful contaminants.
  • Quality Control Laboratories: For conducting precise and reliable analyses.
  • Regulatory Bodies: To enforce safety standards and protect public health.
  • Research Institutions: For developing new methods and improving existing analytical techniques.

Conclusion

The BS EN 15741:2020 standard is a vital tool for anyone involved in the production, analysis, or regulation of animal feeding stuffs. By providing a detailed methodology for the detection of OCPs and PCBs, it ensures that feed products are safe, high-quality, and compliant with international standards. Investing in this standard is an investment in the safety and success of your business.

DESCRIPTION

BS EN 15741:2020

This standard BS EN 15741:2020 Animal feeding stuffs: Methods of sampling and analysis. Determination of OCPs and PCBs by GC/MS is classified in these ICS categories:
  • 65.120 Animal feeding stuffs
This document specifies a gas chromatographic mass spectrometric (GC/MS) method for the determination of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in animal feeding stuffs and oil. The method is applicable to animal feeding stuffs consisting of less than 20 % by mass and oil/fatty samples containing residues of one or more of the following OCPs and PCBs and some of their isomers and degradation products: ? aldrin; ? dieldrin; ? chlordane, as the sum of chlordane isomers and oxychlordane; ? dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), as the sum of isomers op'-DDT, pp'-DDT, pp'-TDE (pp'-DDD), and pp'-DDE; ? endosulfan, as the sum of ?-/?-isomers and endosulfan-sulphate; ? endrin, as the sum of endrin and delta-keto-endrin; ? heptachlor, as the sum of heptachlor and heptachlor epoxide; ? hexachlorobenzene (HCB); ? hexachlorocyclohexane isomers ?-HCH (?-BHC), ?-HCH (?-BHC), ?-HCH (?-BHC or lindane); ? photo heptachlor; ? cis- and trans-nonachlor; ? non dioxin-like PCBs (ndl-PCBs), as the sum of PCB 28, 52, 101, 138, 153 and 180. The method has been fully validated by a collaborative trial for the substances and corresponding ranges (ng/g) noted in Table 1. The method has not been fully validated for oxychlordane, endrin ketone, cis- and trans-nonachlor and photo heptachlor in all matrices. The method is not applicable to chlorocamphene (toxaphene), a complex mixture of polychlorinated camphenes. Chlorocamphene has a very distinctive chromatographic profile and is easily recognisable by GC/ECD. Positive identification of the toxaphene isomers can be performed by negative chemical ionisation mass spectrometry (NCI-MS), electron impact tandem mass spectrometry (EI MS × MS) or electron impact high resolution mass spectrometry (EI-HRMS), which is not within the scope of this method. A limit of quantification (LOQ) for the mentioned organochlorine pesticides of 5 ng/g should normally be obtained. However, 10 ng/g applies for heptachlor aldrin, endrin, dieldrin, and endosulfan (?-, ?- and sulphate). For the ndl-PCBs an LOQ of 0,5 to 1,0 ng/g should be obtained. The LOQs mentioned apply to the individual compounds (i.e. not the sum of two or more compounds). Individual laboratories are responsible for ensuring that the equipment that they used will achieve these LOQs. On customers' demand the standard may be applied to solely the analysis of PCBs or OCPs.
