Overview

The BS EN 17122:2019+A1:2024 is a comprehensive standard that provides a detailed methodology for evaluating the virucidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics specifically used in the veterinary field. This standard is crucial for ensuring that disinfectants and antiseptics are effective in eliminating viruses on non-porous surfaces, which is essential for maintaining hygiene and preventing the spread of infections in veterinary environments.

Purpose and Importance

In the veterinary sector, the control of viral infections is of paramount importance. The BS EN 17122:2019+A1:2024 standard serves as a critical tool for manufacturers and users of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics, providing them with a reliable method to assess the virucidal efficacy of their products. By adhering to this standard, veterinary professionals can ensure that their disinfection protocols are both effective and compliant with the latest industry requirements.

Key Features

  • Quantitative Non-Porous Surface Test: This standard outlines a quantitative test method designed to evaluate the virucidal activity of disinfectants and antiseptics on non-porous surfaces, which are commonly found in veterinary settings.
  • Phase 2, Step 2: The standard is part of a phased approach, focusing on the second step of the second phase, which is critical for in-depth analysis and validation of virucidal activity.
  • Comprehensive Guidelines: With 40 pages of detailed instructions, the standard provides thorough guidance on test methods and requirements, ensuring that users can implement the procedures accurately and effectively.

Benefits of Compliance

Adhering to the BS EN 17122:2019+A1:2024 standard offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Enhanced Safety: By ensuring that disinfectants and antiseptics are effective against viruses, the standard helps protect both animals and humans from potential infections.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Compliance with this standard ensures that products meet the necessary regulatory requirements, facilitating market access and acceptance.
  • Improved Product Credibility: Products tested and validated according to this standard gain credibility and trust among users, enhancing their marketability.

Application in Veterinary Settings

The application of this standard is particularly relevant in veterinary clinics, animal hospitals, and other settings where the risk of viral transmission is high. By implementing the test methods outlined in the standard, these facilities can ensure that their disinfection practices are robust and effective, thereby safeguarding animal health and welfare.

Conclusion

The BS EN 17122:2019+A1:2024 standard is an essential resource for anyone involved in the production, testing, or use of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics in the veterinary field. Its detailed guidelines and rigorous testing methods provide a reliable framework for evaluating virucidal activity, ensuring that products are both safe and effective. By adopting this standard, veterinary professionals can enhance their infection control measures, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes for animals and humans alike.

DESCRIPTION

BS EN 17122:2019+A1:2024

This standard BS EN 17122:2019+A1:2024 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative non-porous surface test for the evaluation of virucidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics used in the veterinary area. Test method and requirements. Phase2, step2 is classified in these ICS categories:
  • 11.080.20 Disinfectants and antiseptics
This European Standard specifies a test method and the minimum requirements for virucidal activity of chemical disinfectant and antiseptic products that form a homogeneous physically stable preparation when diluted with hard water, or - in the case of ready-to-use-products - with water. This European Standard applies to products that are used in the veterinary area on non-porous surfaces without mechanical action i.e. in the breeding, husbandry, production, veterinary care facilities, transport and disposal of all animals except when in the food chain following death and entry to the processing industry. EN 14885 specifies in detail the relationship of the various tests to one another and to "use recommendations". NOTE 1 The method described is intended to determine the activity of commercial formulations or active substances under the conditions in which they are used. NOTE 2 This method corresponds to a Phase 2 Step 2 test. NOTE 3 Using this European Standard, it is possible to determine the virucidal activity of the undiluted product. NOTE 4 This standard uses Porcine Parvovirus because Bovine Enterovirus Type 1 (ECBO) virus used in the suspension test EN 14675 cannot be used for surface testing because of its loss of titre during drying. Porcine Parvovirus has comparable resistance to ECBO virus.
