Why This Standard is Important

Chromium(VI) is a toxic form of chromium that poses significant health risks to both humans and the environment. Its presence in plant biostimulants can lead to contamination of soil and water, affecting plant growth and potentially entering the food chain. The BS EN 17703:2024 standard provides a scientifically validated method for detecting and measuring Chromium(VI) levels, ensuring that biostimulants are safe for use and meet regulatory requirements.

Who Should Use This Standard?

This standard is indispensable for:

  • Agricultural Scientists: Ensuring the safety and effectiveness of biostimulants used in crop production.
  • Environmental Regulators: Monitoring and controlling the levels of hazardous substances in agricultural products.
  • Biostimulant Manufacturers: Complying with industry standards and regulations to maintain product quality.
  • Quality Assurance Professionals: Implementing rigorous testing protocols to ensure product safety.

Detailed Content

The BS EN 17703:2024 standard covers a range of topics essential for the accurate determination of Chromium(VI) in plant biostimulants, including:

  • Analytical Methods: Step-by-step procedures for the detection and quantification of Chromium(VI).
  • Safety Protocols: Guidelines to ensure safe handling and testing of biostimulants.
  • Quality Control: Measures to maintain the integrity and reliability of test results.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Information on meeting national and international standards for biostimulant safety.

Benefits of Compliance

Adhering to the BS EN 17703:2024 standard offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Enhanced Safety: Protects consumers and the environment from the harmful effects of Chromium(VI).
  • Regulatory Assurance: Ensures compliance with legal and industry standards, reducing the risk of penalties and recalls.
  • Market Confidence: Builds trust with consumers and stakeholders by demonstrating a commitment to quality and safety.
  • Competitive Advantage: Positions your products as safe and reliable, enhancing your brand reputation.

Conclusion

The BS EN 17703:2024 standard is an invaluable tool for anyone involved in the production, testing, or regulation of plant biostimulants. By providing a clear and reliable method for determining Chromium(VI) levels, this standard helps ensure the safety and quality of biostimulants, protecting both the environment and public health. Stay ahead in the industry by integrating this essential standard into your operations.

DESCRIPTION

BS EN 17703:2024

This standard BS EN 17703:2024 Plant biostimulants. Determination of chromium(VI) is classified in these ICS categories:
  • 65.080 Fertilizers
This document specifies a method for verifying that hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is not present in plant biostimulants. This document is applicable to all types of plant biostimulants (solid and liquid) used in agriculture. The method specified is suitable to quantify the chromium(VI) content in plant biostimulants down to 2 mg/kg. The results obtained from this method are strictly dependent on the extraction conditions. Results obtained by using other extraction procedures (extraction solution, pH, extraction time, etc.) are not comparable with the results produced by the procedure specified in this document. This document is applicable to the blends of fertilizing products where a blend is a mix of at least two of the following component EU fertilising products: Fertilizers, Liming Materials, Soil Improvers, Growing Media, Inhibitors, Plant Biostimulants and where the following category Plant Biostimulants is the highest percentage in the blend by mass or volume, or in the case of liquid form by dry mass. If Plant Biostimulants is not the highest percentage in the blend, the European Standard for the highest percentage of the blend applies. In case a blend of fertilizing products is composed of components in equal quantity or in case the component EU fertilising products used for the blend have identical formulations , the user decides which standard to apply.
