Importance of Determining Inorganic Arsenic

Inorganic arsenic is a naturally occurring element that can be found in various environmental sources, including soil and water. While it is a common component of the earth's crust, its presence in agricultural products can pose significant health risks. The determination of inorganic arsenic in plant biostimulants is crucial for several reasons:

  • Health and Safety: Ensuring that biostimulants are free from harmful levels of inorganic arsenic protects both human health and the environment.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Adhering to this standard helps manufacturers comply with international safety regulations, facilitating smoother market access.
  • Product Quality: Accurate determination of inorganic arsenic levels ensures the production of high-quality biostimulants that deliver optimal results.

Who Should Use This Standard?

The BS EN 17706:2024 standard is designed for a wide range of stakeholders in the agricultural and environmental sectors, including:

  • Biostimulant Manufacturers: To ensure their products meet safety and quality standards.
  • Regulatory Bodies: To establish guidelines and enforce compliance in the industry.
  • Laboratories: To provide accurate testing and analysis of biostimulant products.
  • Agricultural Consultants: To advise clients on the best practices for using biostimulants safely and effectively.

Benefits of Using BS EN 17706:2024

Adopting the BS EN 17706:2024 standard offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Enhanced Safety: By following the guidelines, manufacturers can ensure their products are safe for use, reducing the risk of contamination and health hazards.
  • Increased Marketability: Products that comply with international standards are more likely to be accepted in global markets, expanding business opportunities.
  • Improved Reputation: Companies that adhere to high safety and quality standards are viewed more favorably by consumers and industry peers.

Conclusion

The BS EN 17706:2024 standard is an indispensable tool for anyone involved in the production, testing, and regulation of plant biostimulants. By providing a clear methodology for the determination of inorganic arsenic, it helps ensure the safety, quality, and compliance of these essential agricultural products. Whether you are a manufacturer, regulator, or consultant, this standard will guide you in maintaining the highest standards of safety and efficacy in the biostimulant industry.

DESCRIPTION

BS EN 17706:2024

This standard BS EN 17706:2024 Plant biostimulants. Determination of inorganic arsenic is classified in these ICS categories:
  • 65.080 Fertilizers
This document specifies a method for extraction, separation, and determination of inorganic arsenic (iAs) in plant biostimulants using anion-exchange high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or ion chromatography (IC) coupled to ICP-MS. This document is applicable to the blends of fertilizing products where a blend is a mix of at least two of the following component EU fertilising products categories: Fertilizers, Liming Materials, Soil Improvers, Growing Media, Inhibitors, Plant Biostimulants, and where the following category Plant Biostimulants is the highest percentage in the blend by mass or volume, or in the case of liquid form by dry mass. If Plant Biostimulants is not the highest percentage in the blend, the European Standard for the highest percentage of the blend applies. In case a blend of fertilizing products is composed of components in equal quantity or in case the component EU fertilising products used for the blend have identical formulations , the user decides which standard to apply.
