Overview

The BS EN IEC 62321-9:2021 standard is an essential document for professionals in the electrotechnical industry. This standard provides a comprehensive methodology for the determination of Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) in polymers using chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Released on October 20, 2021, this 38-page document is a critical resource for ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations.

Why This Standard is Important

Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) is a brominated flame retardant that has been widely used in various polymer applications. However, due to its persistence, bioaccumulation, and potential adverse effects on human health and the environment, it has been listed as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) under the REACH regulation. The BS EN IEC 62321-9:2021 standard provides a reliable and accurate method for detecting and quantifying HBCDD in polymers, helping manufacturers and regulatory bodies to monitor and control its presence in electrotechnical products.

Key Features

  • Comprehensive Methodology: The standard outlines a detailed procedure for the determination of HBCDD in polymers using GC-MS, ensuring accurate and reproducible results.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Adhering to this standard helps manufacturers comply with international regulations and standards, including the REACH regulation.
  • Environmental and Health Safety: By providing a reliable method for detecting HBCDD, this standard supports efforts to reduce the environmental and health impacts of this hazardous substance.
  • Industry Relevance: Applicable to a wide range of electrotechnical products, this standard is relevant for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies.

Detailed Content

The BS EN IEC 62321-9:2021 standard is divided into several sections, each providing detailed information on different aspects of the methodology:

  • Introduction: An overview of the importance of detecting HBCDD in polymers and the relevance of the GC-MS method.
  • Scope: Defines the range of applications and limitations of the standard.
  • Normative References: Lists other standards and documents referenced in the methodology.
  • Terms and Definitions: Provides definitions of key terms used in the standard.
  • Principle: Describes the underlying principles of the GC-MS method for detecting HBCDD.
  • Reagents and Materials: Lists the chemicals and materials required for the analysis.
  • Apparatus: Details the equipment needed for the GC-MS analysis.
  • Sampling and Sample Preparation: Provides guidelines for collecting and preparing samples for analysis.
  • Procedure: Outlines the step-by-step process for conducting the GC-MS analysis.
  • Calculation and Expression of Results: Explains how to calculate and report the results of the analysis.
  • Quality Control and Assurance: Provides guidelines for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the analysis.
  • Test Report: Specifies the information that should be included in the test report.

Who Should Use This Standard?

The BS EN IEC 62321-9:2021 standard is designed for a wide range of professionals and organizations, including:

  • Manufacturers: Companies producing electrotechnical products that need to ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
  • Testing Laboratories: Laboratories conducting analyses of electrotechnical products for the presence of HBCDD.
  • Regulatory Bodies: Government and regulatory agencies responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with environmental and safety standards.
  • Environmental Consultants: Professionals providing advice and support on environmental compliance and safety issues.

DESCRIPTION

BS EN IEC 62321-9:2021

This standard BS EN IEC 62321-9:2021 Determination of certain substances in electrotechnical products is classified in these ICS categories:
  • 43.040.10 Electrical and electronic equipment
  • 13.020.01 Environment and environmental protection in general
This part of IEC 62321 specifies two techniques for the determination of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) in polymers of electrotechnical products. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) test method is described in the normative part of this document. The GC-MS method is suitable for the determination of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD). A method using high-pressure liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) is given in informative Annex A. These test methods have been evaluated for use with EPS (expanded polystyrene foam), XPS (extruded polystyrene foam) and ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) within the concentration ranges as specified in Table 1. The use of this method for other types of materials or concentration ranges outside those specified below has not been evaluated. [Table 1] This document has the status of a horizontal standard in accordance with IEC Guide 108.
