Understanding Luminous Transmittance

Luminous transmittance is a measure of the amount of light that passes through a material. It is a critical parameter for materials that are used in applications where transparency and light diffusion are important. The BS EN ISO 13468-2:2021 standard provides a comprehensive method for measuring this property, ensuring that materials meet the necessary specifications for their intended use.

Double-Beam Instrumentation

The use of a double-beam instrument, as specified in this standard, allows for more accurate and reliable measurements. This type of instrument compares the light passing through the sample with a reference beam, minimizing errors and providing a more precise measurement of luminous transmittance. This is particularly beneficial in quality control processes, where consistency and accuracy are paramount.

Applications and Benefits

The BS EN ISO 13468-2:2021 standard is applicable across a wide range of industries. Here are some of the key benefits and applications:

  • Automotive Industry: Ensures that materials used in windows and light covers meet safety and performance standards.
  • Construction: Guarantees that transparent materials used in buildings provide adequate light transmission while maintaining structural integrity.
  • Consumer Electronics: Assures that screens and displays offer optimal clarity and brightness.

Enhancing Product Quality

By adhering to the BS EN ISO 13468-2:2021 standard, manufacturers can enhance the quality and performance of their products. This not only helps in meeting regulatory requirements but also boosts consumer confidence in the product's reliability and effectiveness.

Conclusion

The BS EN ISO 13468-2:2021 is an indispensable resource for professionals in the plastics industry. Its comprehensive guidelines ensure that transparent materials are tested accurately for luminous transmittance, thereby guaranteeing their suitability for various applications. By implementing this standard, businesses can achieve higher quality products, meet industry regulations, and maintain a competitive edge in the market.

Invest in the BS EN ISO 13468-2:2021 standard today and ensure your products meet the highest standards of quality and performance.

DESCRIPTION

BS EN ISO 13468-2:2021

This standard BS EN ISO 13468-2:2021 Plastics. Determination of the total luminous transmittance of transparent materials is classified in these ICS categories:
  • 83.080.01 Plastics in general

This document covers the determination of the total luminous transmittance, in the visible region of the spectrum, of planar transparent plastics and substantially colourless plastics, using a double-beam scanning spectrophotometer. This document cannot be used for plastics which contain fluorescent materials.

This document is applicable to transparent moulding materials, films and sheets not exceeding 10 mm in thickness.

NOTE 1

Total luminous transmittance can also be determined by a single-beam instrument as in ISO 13468-1.

NOTE 2

Substantially colourless plastics include those which are faintly tinted.

NOTE 3

Specimens more than 10 mm thick can be measured provided the instrument can accommodate them, but the results cannot be comparable with those obtained using specimens less than 10 mm thick.
