Overview

Released on May 15, 2019, this standard is a part of the internationally recognized ISO series, specifically tailored for the coatings industry. With a total of 16 pages, it provides detailed methodologies and guidelines to accurately determine the particle size distribution of coating powders, a critical factor in achieving optimal coating performance.

Key Features

  • Standard Number: BS EN ISO 8130-1:2019
  • ISBN: 978 0 580 52440 0
  • Status: Current Standard

Why Particle Size Distribution Matters

Understanding the particle size distribution of coating powders is crucial for several reasons:

  • Quality Control: Ensures uniformity and consistency in the final product, reducing defects and improving overall quality.
  • Performance Optimization: Influences the flow properties, application efficiency, and final appearance of the coating.
  • Cost Efficiency: Helps in optimizing the use of materials, reducing waste, and enhancing the economic efficiency of the coating process.

Comprehensive Methodology

The BS EN ISO 8130-1:2019 standard provides a detailed methodology for sieving, a widely used technique for particle size analysis. This method involves passing the coating powder through a series of sieves with different mesh sizes, allowing for the separation and quantification of particles based on size. The standard outlines the necessary equipment, procedural steps, and calculation methods to ensure accurate and repeatable results.

Who Should Use This Standard?

This standard is indispensable for:

  • Manufacturers of Coating Powders: To ensure product quality and compliance with industry standards.
  • Quality Assurance Professionals: To implement rigorous testing protocols and maintain high standards of quality control.
  • Research and Development Teams: To innovate and improve coating formulations and processes.

Benefits of Compliance

Adhering to the BS EN ISO 8130-1:2019 standard offers numerous benefits:

  • Enhanced Product Quality: By ensuring consistent particle size distribution, the quality and performance of the coating are significantly improved.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Aligns with international standards, facilitating market access and acceptance.
  • Competitive Advantage: Demonstrates a commitment to quality and excellence, enhancing brand reputation and customer trust.

Conclusion

The BS EN ISO 8130-1:2019 standard is a vital resource for anyone involved in the production, testing, or application of coating powders. By providing a clear and precise methodology for determining particle size distribution, it helps ensure the highest levels of quality and performance in powder coating applications. Embrace this standard to enhance your processes, meet industry demands, and achieve excellence in your coating operations.

DESCRIPTION

BS EN ISO 8130-1:2019

This standard BS EN ISO 8130-1:2019 Coating powders is classified in these ICS categories:
  • 87.040 Paints and varnishes

This document specifies a method for the determination of the particle size distribution of coating powders by sieve analysis. Particle size distributions with a maximum of less than 100 µm is determined by laser diffraction, ISO 8130‑13. This method is used especially for determining the oversize material or for the presence of contamination and can be used as a quality control procedure (“go”/“no go” test) by checking the amount retained on a single sieve.

The following particle sizes are typical for coating powders, however the particle size can deviate depending on the application:

  • thin-film technology: 1 µm to 63 µm;

  • electrostatic coating: 10 µm to 200 µm;

  • fluidizing-bed method: 100 µm and above.

NOTE Sieves with a mesh size smaller than 32 µm are not practical and are likely to become blind during use.
