Overview

The BS EN ISO/CIE 11664-3:2019 is a pivotal standard in the field of colorimetry, focusing on the CIE tristimulus values. This standard is essential for professionals and researchers who are involved in the science of color measurement and analysis. It provides a comprehensive framework for understanding and applying the CIE tristimulus values, which are fundamental to the accurate representation and communication of color.

What are CIE Tristimulus Values?

CIE tristimulus values are a set of three numerical values that describe the color of a light source or object. These values are derived from the CIE 1931 color space, which is one of the most widely used color spaces in the world. The tristimulus values are represented by the symbols X, Y, and Z, and they correspond to the three primary colors: red, green, and blue. By using these values, it is possible to accurately describe any color in terms of its intensity and hue.

Importance of the Standard

The BS EN ISO/CIE 11664-3:2019 standard is crucial for ensuring consistency and accuracy in color measurement across different industries. Whether you are working in manufacturing, design, or research, having a standardized approach to colorimetry is essential. This standard helps to eliminate discrepancies in color perception and ensures that colors are represented accurately, regardless of the medium or context.

Applications

This standard is applicable in a wide range of fields, including:

  • Manufacturing: Ensuring that products meet color specifications and quality standards.
  • Design: Providing designers with a reliable framework for color selection and application.
  • Research: Facilitating accurate color measurement and analysis in scientific studies.
  • Photography and Film: Ensuring that colors are captured and reproduced accurately in visual media.

Benefits of Using the Standard

By adhering to the BS EN ISO/CIE 11664-3:2019 standard, professionals can enjoy several benefits, including:

  • Consistency: Achieve uniformity in color representation across different platforms and devices.
  • Accuracy: Ensure precise color measurement and communication, reducing errors and misunderstandings.
  • Quality Assurance: Maintain high standards of color quality in products and services.
  • Global Recognition: Align with internationally recognized standards, enhancing credibility and marketability.

Structure of the Standard

The BS EN ISO/CIE 11664-3:2019 standard is structured to provide clear and concise guidelines for the application of CIE tristimulus values. With 18 pages of detailed information, it covers the theoretical foundations of colorimetry, practical applications, and the mathematical models used to calculate tristimulus values. This comprehensive approach ensures that users have all the necessary tools to implement the standard effectively.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the BS EN ISO/CIE 11664-3:2019 standard is an indispensable resource for anyone involved in the field of colorimetry. By providing a standardized approach to the calculation and application of CIE tristimulus values, it ensures that colors are represented accurately and consistently across various industries and applications. Whether you are a manufacturer, designer, or researcher, this standard will help you achieve the highest levels of precision and quality in your work.

DESCRIPTION

BS EN ISO/CIE 11664-3:2019

This standard BS EN ISO/CIE 11664-3:2019 Colorimetry is classified in these ICS categories:
  • 17.180.20 Colours and measurement of light

This document specifies methods of calculating the tristimulus values of colour stimuli for which the spectral distributions are provided. These colour stimuli can be produced by self-luminous light sources or by reflecting or transmitting objects.

This document requires that the colour stimulus function be tabulated at measurement intervals of 5 nm or less in a wavelength range of at least 380 nm to 780 nm. Extrapolation methods are suggested for cases where the measured wavelength range is less than 380 nm to 780 nm.

The standard method is defined as summation at 1 nm intervals over the wavelength range from 360 nm to 830 nm. Alternative abridged methods are defined for larger intervals (up to 5 nm) and shorter ranges (down to 380 nm to 780 nm). The alternative methods are to be used only when appropriate and when the user has reviewed the impact on the final results.

This document can be used in conjunction with the CIE 1931 standard colorimetric observer or the CIE 1964 standard colorimetric observer.
