DESCRIPTION

IEEE 1617-2022

The scope of this guide includes corrosion of copper shields in jacketed and unjacketed extruded dielectric cables rated 5 kV to 46 kV. The function of the metallic shield and consequences of significant loss of shield wires, straps, or tapes are discussed. The causes of corrosion in cable metallic shields, and the methods available to assess this corrosion are described. Recommendations are made for the mitigation and control of corrosion of cable metallic shields.

The purpose of this document is to provide guidance for the assessment, mitigation, and control of corrosion in metallic shield wires, straps, or tapes in both jacketed and unjacketed, medium voltage, extruded dielectric cables rated 5 kV to 46 kV.

Revision Standard - Active. A summary of the methods for detection, mitigation, and control of metallic shield corrosion in 5 kV to 46 kV underground distribution cable installed in conduit or direct buried is provided in this guide. The causes of corrosion in metallic shields and the methods available to detect this corrosion are described. The purpose of the metallic shield and the consequences of significant loss of the metallic shield are discussed. Recommendations are made for the mitigation and control of the cable metallic shield corrosion.
