PD CEN/TS 927-15:2024 - Paints and Varnishes Standard

PD CEN/TS 927-15:2024 - Paints and Varnishes Standard

Introducing the PD CEN/TS 927-15:2024, a comprehensive standard that sets the benchmark for assessing the bleeding of coloured wood extractives through coatings on exterior wood. This standard is essential for professionals in the paints and varnishes industry, providing a reliable method to evaluate the performance of coating materials and systems when exposed to water immersion.

Overview

The PD CEN/TS 927-15:2024 standard is a crucial document for manufacturers, quality control specialists, and researchers involved in the development and application of coatings for exterior wood. Released on October 28, 2024, this standard offers a detailed methodology for assessing the potential for bleeding of coloured wood extractives, which can significantly impact the aesthetic and protective qualities of wood coatings.

Key Features

  • Standard Number: PD CEN/TS 927-15:2024
  • Pages: 14
  • ISBN: 978 0 539 31383 3
  • Status: Standard

Why This Standard Matters

Exterior wood coatings are subjected to various environmental factors, including moisture, which can lead to the bleeding of coloured wood extractives. This phenomenon not only affects the visual appeal of the coating but can also compromise its protective function. The PD CEN/TS 927-15:2024 standard provides a systematic approach to evaluate this risk, ensuring that coatings maintain their integrity and appearance over time.

Benefits of Using This Standard

By adhering to the guidelines set forth in this standard, manufacturers and applicators can:

  • Enhance Product Quality: Ensure that coatings are tested for their resistance to extractive bleeding, leading to higher quality and more reliable products.
  • Improve Customer Satisfaction: Deliver coatings that maintain their appearance and performance, meeting customer expectations and reducing complaints.
  • Optimize Research and Development: Utilize the standard's methodology to innovate and improve coating formulations, staying ahead in a competitive market.

Detailed Methodology

The PD CEN/TS 927-15:2024 standard outlines a water immersion test designed to simulate real-world conditions that exterior wood coatings may encounter. This test is critical for identifying coatings that are susceptible to extractive bleeding, allowing for adjustments in formulation or application techniques to mitigate this issue.

Test Procedure

The water immersion test involves submerging coated wood samples in water for a specified period, followed by an assessment of any bleeding of coloured extractives. This procedure provides valuable insights into the coating's performance and its ability to protect the wood substrate effectively.

Who Should Use This Standard?

This standard is indispensable for a wide range of professionals, including:

  • Coating Manufacturers: To ensure their products meet industry standards and perform as expected in exterior applications.
  • Quality Control Specialists: To implement rigorous testing protocols that guarantee product reliability and customer satisfaction.
  • Researchers and Developers: To explore new formulations and technologies that enhance the performance of wood coatings.
  • Architects and Specifiers: To select coatings that are proven to withstand environmental challenges, ensuring the longevity and aesthetics of their projects.

Conclusion

The PD CEN/TS 927-15:2024 standard is a vital resource for anyone involved in the production, application, or specification of exterior wood coatings. By providing a clear and effective method for assessing the risk of extractive bleeding, this standard helps ensure that coatings deliver both aesthetic appeal and long-lasting protection. Embrace this standard to enhance your products, satisfy your customers, and lead the way in the paints and varnishes industry.

DESCRIPTION

PD CEN/TS 927-15:2024

This standard PD CEN/TS 927-15:2024 Paints and varnishes. Coating materials and coating systems for exterior wood is classified in these ICS categories:
  • 87.040 Paints and varnishes
This document specifies a test method using water immersion test for assessing the bleeding of coloured wood extractives through a coating. Leachates of coated and uncoated wood are collected after the immersion procedure and their colour is compared. The colour of the coated wood before and after immersion tests is also compared. This document does not specify acceptance values for colour differences that can be tolerated and it is not applicable to staining caused by knots for which there is a different test method (see EN 927 7). NOTE The method has been developed for oak and chestnut wood and might be applicable for other wood substrates containing water soluble extractives.
